When your pet faces a sudden health concern it is crucial to act quickly. At SomerPet we are here to help you make informed decisions to provide the best possible outcome for your pet. Same day urgent care appointments available.
Just like you, we want your pet to live the longest, healthiest life possible. Annual exams help by preventing, diagnosing, and treating disease early, often before any noticeable symptoms begin. The earlier treatment starts, the more effective it is, keeping your pet from unnecessary pain and suffering.
We recommend a physical exam at least once a year for adult pets. Our nose-to-tail exams give us a good picture of your pet’s overall health and alert us to any changes that might have occurred since your pet’s last visit.
If you’ve recently adopted or purchased a pet, we encourage you to book an appointment for a first examination as soon as possible. Young animals are vulnerable to illness, and an exam lets us make sure they have the vaccinations they need, reassure you of their health, and gives us a baseline for their medical records.
Puppy and Kitten Care
New puppies and kittens should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible after adoption for many reasons. Most importantly, young animals don’t have full immunity from disease, so they need to have a series of vaccinations given at specific intervals to make sure they are safe from diseases that can be life-threatening. Puppies and kittens should also have parasite screening and deworming. Plus, this first visit is a good time to ask questions about nutrition, behavior and other aspects of caring for your new pet.
Senior Care
We love senior pets! We recommend exams with lab work at least twice a year for our senior companions because pets age more rapidly than humans, which means diseases and illnesses progress more quickly as well.
The good news is dogs and cats are living longer today thanks to advances in veterinary medicine. While older pets are faced with more age-related conditions that impact the quality of their lives, we are here to partner with you to help your senior pet age well.
Parasite Prevention
Fleas, ticks, worms – preventing them in the first place is much easier and ultimately less expensive than getting rid of them after they’ve infested your pet. We recommend having your pet screened for internal parasites regularly, and we offer a variety of alternatives for flea, tick and heartworm prevention.
Behavioral Medicine
Behavior issues are something most pet owners face at one time or another. Changes in mood or behavior are often symptoms of underlying medical conditions. We can help identify and treat the root cause of these shifts, whether it’s a medical solution or one that involves training.
Nutritional Counseling
There are so many options for feeding our companion animals these days; wet food, dry food, home-cooked, raw—what’s best? Proper nutrition is important to an animal’s good health, and we can help you choose the best option for your pet and lifestyle.
Pain Management
Just like people, pets can suffer lingering effects and discomfort from an injury or surgical procedure. SomerPet takes treating pain seriously and offers several options to help pets feel better. We’ll develop a pain management program that’s customized for your pet’s condition and needs.
Vaccinations
Updated vaccinations are a highly effective way to prevent many common diseases and infections. For dogs, that means parvo, leptospirosis, distemper, and rabies. Cats need vaccinations for feline leukemia, panleukopenia, and rabies. Beyond those core vaccines, we will evaluate your pet’s age, lifestyle and likely exposure to certain diseases before we recommend additional inoculations.
Microchipping
Microchipping your pets is an important way to keep them safe. The sad fact is that only 17% of dogs and 2% of cats make it back to their owners when they become lost. Microchipping greatly increases the chances that your pet will be returned to you—it’s also affordable and relatively painless. We believe microchipping is the safest, most effective method of pet recovery available.
Regular dental care is essential for keeping your pet healthy and happy. Dental disease is a common problem in small animals, and it can lead to serious health problems if left untreated. Periodic dental exams help maintain proper oral hygiene and prevent future complications.
At SomerPet, we use ultrasonic scaling to gently remove large accumulations of dental plaque above and below the gum line and a high-speed polishing unit to smooth out rough surfaces on teeth.
Accurate detection is key when it comes to treating your pet, and we offer complete diagnostics including digital radiology (x-rays) and ultrasound imaging. Plus, SomerPet has an in-house laboratory where we perform many diagnostic lab tests while you wait. We can perform blood screens, pre-anesthetic bloodwork, urinalysis and other types of testing on site.
While we offer an extensive range of on-site testing, your pet may need laboratory work beyond our scope. For those cases, we are happy to send blood work or other testing to an outside lab that will send results back to us.
Digital Radiology (X-Rays)
We use advanced imaging technologies to guarantee the highest quality of care for our patients.
Radiographs, or x-rays, use electromagnetic radiation directed towards the body to highlight objects within. They can detect abnormalities including skeletal fractures, soft tissue damage, foreign bodies and dental disease.
Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a powerful diagnostic tool that creates a real-time image of an animal’s body. This composite reveals important information about internal processes including the circulatory, skeletal and gastrointestinal systems. When used in conjunction with other diagnostic tools like x-rays, ultrasounds can help identify disease, blockages, skeletal fractures, soft tissue damage and other internal injuries.
An ultrasound works by broadcasting high-frequency sound waves that reflect off your pet’s internal structures. A small probe held against the skin collects the returning signals to create an image of the internal body, used to examine abdominal organs like the stomach, kidneys, liver, spleen and gallbladder. An ultrasound of the heart, known as an echocardiogram, provides precise information about heart valves, blood flow, chamber size and contractions.
Completely painless and non-invasive, ultrasounds usually require some sedation because the patient must remain completely still. We use advanced imaging technologies guaranteeing the highest quality of care for our patients.
Surgery is often the most effective way to treat a serious injury or disorder, and SomerPet performs surgeries in state-of-the-art facilities with cutting-edge equipment. Our veterinary team will walk you through the entire process, giving you the tools to make informed decisions regarding your pet’s treatment options. We understand surgery is a stressful time for any owner, and we’re available every step of the way to answer questions and put your mind at ease.
Anesthesia
Many pet parents are concerned when their pets have a procedure that requires anesthesia. As always, your pet’s safety is our main priority. While there is some degree of risk with any medical procedure, we use the safest available anesthetics and require pre-operative blood testing to ensure that your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia.
A surgical assistant is always present to monitor vitals, including heart activity, ECG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiratory system and temperature to make sure your pet is safe and unharmed while he or she is under anesthesia. Patients are continuously observed post op until they are fully recovered and awake. In addition, our experienced medical team provides effective pain management during and after all surgical procedures to ensure your pet recovers quickly and with minimum discomfort.
